Why your server needs a ban appeal process
Staff make mistakes. Evidence gets misread, two players share a house and an internet connection, a joke in chat reads like a threat. Without an appeal route, those mistakes stay, and the player tells everyone they know that your staff ban people for nothing.
- It fixes wrong bans quickly, before a good player gives up on your server.
- It gives players who did break a rule a way back once they have learned from it.
- It keeps arguments about bans out of general chat and out of staff direct messages.
- It protects your staff, because every ban can be checked by someone else.
- It shows new players that the rules are applied the same way to everyone.
A ban appeal form template
A good appeal form asks for the facts staff need to find the ban, and gives the player room to explain. Put it in a form, a ticket bot or a pinned message in a ban appeals channel.

Leave out questions that only make players angry, such as why should we unban you. The form is there to collect facts, and the review is where you judge them.
What a good ban appeal looks like
Players who search for how to write a ban appeal usually want a magic sentence. There is none. Appeals that work are short, calm and honest. These two examples show both kinds of appeal, and you can link players to this section before they write theirs.
- An appeal for a ban that was a mistake
I was banned yesterday evening for x-ray. I play with the default textures and no mods. I think staff saw me mine straight to diamonds, but I was following a cave I had already lit up the day before. I recorded part of that session and put the clip in this ticket. I would be happy to screenshare my mods folder if that helps.
- An appeal for a second chance
I was banned two weeks ago for griefing a house near spawn. The ban was fair: I broke the rule and I am sorry to the owner. I would like a second chance, and I am willing to rebuild what I broke if staff let me. I have read the rules again and I understand that another grief means a permanent ban.
- Appeals fail when they demand an unban, insult the staff member or call the ban stupid.
- They fail when the player lies about something the logs clearly show.
- They fail when the same appeal is posted in five channels and sent to every moderator.
- They fail when the player has already been back on another account.
How staff should review ban appeals
A review is only fair if it follows the same steps each time. Write them down for your staff, and do not skip them for players you like or dislike.
- Give the appeal to a different staff member than the one who gave the ban. On larger servers this is often a senior moderator.
- Read the evidence from the ban: the screenshot, the chat log or the block log.
- Look at the player's history: earlier warnings, mutes and bans.
- Check for new accounts from the same player since the ban.
- Ask the staff member who gave the ban for their side if anything is unclear.
- Decide within a few days, and write down why.

Waiting periods before a player can appeal
A waiting period stops players from appealing an hour after a fair ban, and gives them time to cool down. Match it to the steps in your punishment ladder, and say it on the rules page so nobody is surprised.

How to lift a ban after an accepted appeal
When an appeal is accepted, lift the ban straight away and tell the player, so they do not try to join before they know.
With commands

Many ban plugins use /unban instead of /pardon and keep their own list, so use the command of the plugin that gave the ban.
In the server panel
In the server panel of Astroworld Hosting and minecrafthosting.cc, open Players and choose the Bans tab. Each banned player shows the reason that was given. Open the menu next to the player and choose Unban player. When you ban someone from the same page with Ban player, fill in the reason, because that is what the next staff member reads during an appeal.
How to add a ban appeal link to your rules page
Each template in the website builder has a Rules page with an intro, the list of rules and a help bar below them. This is how you use that page to tell players how appeals work.
Open the website editor
Go to Website in the server panel of Astroworld Hosting or minecrafthosting.cc and open the editor.
Open the Rules page
Pick the Rules page and click the section with the list of rules.
Add a rule about appeals
Press Add rule, set the Title to something like Appeals are always possible, and write in the Description where to appeal, who reviews it and how long players wait. Pick an Icon that stands out from the other rules.
Point the help bar to your appeals
Click the help bar below the rules. Change the Heading to Think a ban was a mistake?, write one line under Description, paste the link to your appeal form or ticket channel under Link and set the Button text to Appeal a ban.
Answer it in the FAQ
On the page with your FAQ section, add the question How do I appeal a ban? with the same answer, so players find it wherever they look.
Publish the page
Press Publish. After the automatic content check and a review by our team, usually within a few hours, the appeal route is on your live site.

How do I write a good Minecraft ban appeal?
Give your username, the ban reason and your side of what happened in a few calm sentences. Say whether you think it was a mistake or you are asking for a second chance, add any screenshots or clips, and send it once, in the place the server asks for.
How long should a player wait before appealing a ban?
It depends on the offence. A possible mistake can be appealed straight away, chat offences after a few days, griefing after about a week and cheating after about a month. Put your own waiting periods on your rules page.
Who should review a ban appeal?
A different staff member than the one who gave the ban, usually a senior moderator or an admin. They read the evidence and the player's history and can ask the original staff member for their side.
How do I unban a player on my Minecraft server?
Use /pardon with the username, or /unban if a ban plugin gave the ban. In the server panel of Astroworld Hosting and minecrafthosting.cc, open Players, choose the Bans tab and choose Unban player next to the player.
Should a server accept most ban appeals?
Accept the ones that show a mistake or a player who clearly understands what they did. Deny appeals that blame staff, lie about the evidence or come from players who kept playing on other accounts.
What if a banned player keeps appealing or makes new accounts?
Close repeat appeals before the waiting period ends, and ban new accounts as ban evasion. Tell the player once, calmly, when their next appeal can be read, and then stick to it.
